You Can't Make This Stuff Up
A gem from my job-search tour...
Here's the scene. I'm touring a beautiful office of the Family Health Team attached to the hospital of a mid-sized community. The physician recruiter, a retired surgeon, is chatting with my husband while I listen politely to the head of the Health Team. At one point, the recruiter says to my husband:
"All but one of the family doctors here are women. In fact, most of the physicians in this community are women. It's okay though... male physicians don't work hard anymore either."
Love it. My husband didn't share this gem with me until we were in the car on our way out of town. I couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous it was.
Needless to say, this community is no longer on my list.

OK, OK, I see I will be in the minority here. But...I have to say, my first thought on reading that was, "that's cool that he recognizes that younger men aren't interested in crazy hours any more than younger women are". Just my perspective, coming from a dual-doc couple where Mom & Dad both do medicine & both look after kids part-time.
You were there, you saw what he was like the rest of the time, maybe he is just an old sexist surgeon jerk and you don't want to practice in a community within 100 miles of him. But is it at all possible that he was actually just being slightly aware of the new medical generation?? Where we recognize that we want lives, want to spend time with our kids as well as do great medicine? Seems a bit harsh to wipe the whole community off your list just because of him....my two cents. (Anonymous Preceptor).

Ha! The community didn't fit our needs for a number of reasons. We wouldn't write one off based solely on the archaic views of the recruiter. And I certainly don't intend to debate what was meant by his statement, because the message was clear enough to my husband who doesn't have his back up over this issue already quite as much as I do.

hey couz,
had a favour to ask, a long time ago you posted a post about getting into medical school. You talked about GPA, degree, the MCAT and a whole lot of other stuff.
You left the post by saying that you'll discuss about "interviews", the dos and don't in another post. I don't think you had a chance to give advice on the interview stage of the medical admissions process. Your posts really helped me :-)

I can't believe he said that. Although I can't believe a lot of sexist comments or ridiculous ones for that matter come from so many people these days. I would have scratched them off my list and moved on as well. Best of luck.
